The AIU girls school was opened in Tripoli on 1 October 1896 under the directorship of Esther Arie. The AIU decided to start with a relatively small number of pupils (between forty and fifty) due to the novelty of the project and because of financial constraints (see table 4).14 As a result of this decision, quite a few candidates were rejected, and Ms. Arie was able to choose the most promising ones. This situation continued even when the number of pupils in the AIU school increased, and during the Ottoman period there were always more candidates than could be accepted.15
The prestige of the school was manifested by the tuition fees issue. From the very beginning, the directors tried to collect tuition fees, albeit symbolic and low sums, from their pupils, at least from the wealthier among them. The management’s lack of success stemmed from two sources: poverty and custom. Most of the families who sent their daughters to the AIU school were very poor and could not afford to pay. In addition, they knew that no other educational institution in Tripoli demanded payment. During the first ten years of the school’s operation, no more than six girls paid tuition fees per year, and these were inconsiderable sums (table 5). Sometimes, the parents promised to pay at the beginning of the year in order to guarantee their daughters’ registration, but once the girls were enrolled, the parents refused to pay, claiming that no one else paid.
